Explore nostalgia, emotion, and the art of visual storytelling without color.

As photographers we sometimes get wrapped into nostalgia.  Defined as "a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations."   But that is not all bad.  In fact it is one of the things that make our photography timeless and important to us.

For this series we are going to focus on Nostalgic Black & Whites.  But more importantly how can we evoke the timeless nature that oftentimes exists in Black & White Photography.   When you remove color from your images you can sometimes remove a particular emotion and often times change the focus and impact of your completed work.

This series is designed to build upon our first series about The Vision of Black & White and our second series on Intentional Black & Whites.  We welcome back two past speakers while making way for two influential black & white instructors.  Together we will explore some of the timeless techniques employed to create images that resound with your soul while also exploring new techniques and considerations like converting Infrared to Black & White and considerations for Post Processing that did not exist in the dark room.

  • The series starts on May 22nd with acclaimed B&W photographer Chuck Kimmerle who shares with us insights from working as a news photographer and more recently as a multiple recipient of Artist in Residence Programs at various National Parks.
  • After Chuck, we literally go down under on May 27th to learn from Australian Photographer Len Metcalf where we will learn about working more personally rather than to formulas or following the crowd.
  • Following Chuck we welcome back John Barclay on June 5th to dazzle us with not only his brillance but also his insights as we see the world through his heart based approach and also discover how he now uses Infrared in his B&W work.
  • Returning to NPC and ending the series on June 12th will be Jennifer King.  Jennifer takes a light handed approach to her work yet communicates powerfully on what she wants her black & whites to represent.

Each LIVE session will be held at 4:00 pm PT / 7:00 pm ET and will be approximately 120 and 150 minutes in length.

Registration for the series comes with the opportunity to ask questions live, rewatch the sessions as much as you want for as long as you want, and even download for offline viewing. They are all recorded so no need to be there live! You will have permanent access to the recordings through your NPC account, YouTube or Dropbox file download.

Priced at $22 each or $77 for the entire series you can cost effectively dive into the creation of your own stories.

Are you an annual or monthly member? You’ll gain access to all these sessions the day after they’re streamed live!

Nature Photography Classes offer are a unique opportunity to hear from and interact with people that rarely speak with audiences and are considered some of the best photography educators in the world.

5% of all registration fees will be donated to the environmental cause or organization of the speakers choosing.  Another great opportunity to give back!

This is a very exciting series for all of us to learn new ways to communicate in the medium without color but certainly with tremendous impact.  This series will be hosted by the founder of the Nature Photography Academy and past moderator Meredith Fontana.

Chuck Kimmerle teaches “Creating Original and Compelling Landscape Photographs"

Chuck Kimmerle

With trillions of photographs being created each year, it can seem a daunting task to get our work noticed above the din. Through examples of his own work, and that of others, we will discuss best practices for creating unique work while staying true to our personal vision.

Bio:

Chuck began his photography career as a newspaper photojournalist and photo editor. It was during this time that he, along with three fellow staff photographers, was named as a finalist for the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography. After more than 15 years working at daily newspapers in four different states, Chuck left the stress of photojournalism and began working as chief photographer, and occasional art director, at the University of North Dakota, where he remained for another ten years.

During these years as a staff photographer, Chuck spent an increasing amount of time photographing the landscapes near where he lived. As his work photographs were primarily done color and prominently featured people, his personal work was exclusively black and white and eschewed people.

This distinct delineation between his work pictures and personal, creative photographs was essential. However, there is no denying the influence that photojournalism has had upon his personal work. His images are direct, reticent, balanced, and unique with much of it containing artificial (man-made) objects juxtaposed against the natural landscape.

Len Metcalf teaches “Monochrome Lens: Abstraction, Intuition, Nature and the Inner Landscape"

Len Metcalf

Monochrome photography has a way of slowing us down. It removes distraction and invites a deeper kind of seeing — not only into the landscape, but into ourselves. In this considered and quietly powerful presentation, Australian artist and educator Len Metcalf shares his unique approach to monochrome nature photography, one shaped by abstraction, intuition, and emotional resonance.

Rather than following convention or technical formulae, Len invites participants to explore image-making as a deeply personal and creative act — one rooted in quiet observation and inner awareness. The work becomes less about recording reality and more about shaping a personal, interpretive vision. Tone, form and light become expressive tools, and the photograph shifts from recording to creative expression.

Through the careful use of tonal contrast and a deep understanding of how the eye reads light, Len teaches how to guide the viewer’s attention and create images that are not only aesthetically powerful, but psychologically rich. He explores how our imagination lingers in the shadows, and how simplicity can be liberating rather than limiting.

At its heart, Len’s monochrome practice is about creating with care — not only for the art itself, but for the natural world it honours. His work offers a quiet resistance to the fast, bright culture of distraction, and calls for a more reverent way of seeing. Beneath the surface, this presentation is also a gentle call to action — a reminder of what we stand to lose, and a tribute to the fragile beauty we must fight to protect.

Bio:

Len Metcalf is an Australian artist whose creative life is deeply rooted in the Blue Mountains — a place he calls his spiritual home. His photographs, known for their quiet clarity and emotional depth, reflect a long and thoughtful engagement with the natural world. Working primarily in monochrome, Len creates contemplative images that explore abstraction, mood, and form, including hand-crafted photogravures that extend his photographic practice into the tactile realm of fine art printmaking.

Though best known for his photography, Len’s creative work also spans drawing, painting, and printmaking. He is a trained and highly experienced educator, with two degrees in education and a lifelong passion for teaching. His approach to learning is anything but conventional — blending artistic intuition with clear structure, emotional sensitivity with practical guidance. Len has taught in classrooms, workshops, wilderness settings, and universities — including training teachers themselves — always with the same commitment: to awaken creative confidence and help people see with new eyes.

His work is held in private and public collections around the world, including a major portfolio at PhotoMuse: The Museum of Photography. But perhaps his most enduring legacy lies in the lives of his students — artists and photographers who credit Len with transforming not only their images, but their ways of seeing, thinking, and being.

At heart, Len is an environmentalist and educator who uses art to foster care — for self, for others, and for the fragile, fleeting landscapes we live within. His work speaks not only to what we see, but to how we see — and why it matters.
