Image Structure

We will explore some of the following essential concepts of composition and image design:

1. Learn to recognize and overcome some of the challenges we experience in our images.
2. Discover more of what makes a compelling image.
3. Explore how we define composition.
4. Review some examples from Nic’s own work where his technique, vision, or processing was not aligned and thus the viewer was left confused.
5. Look at how the eye and brain moves through images and how it will leave if confused or unstimulated.
6. Discuss the 19 “rules” for landscape photography with image examples and ways to recognize them in the field.
7. Examine the different mood lines that we experience in nature and how we can use those and the inherent shapes that are formed to communicate with or direct the viewer through images in a more concise and clear way.

In this class I will talk about how the most important thing in photography is you and how you look through the light harvester (IE the camera) and the choices and decisions you make on how to collect the light that is falling in front of you onto your subjects of choice. 

Some of the topics covered in this presentation include but are not limited to.

1. New ways to think about light.
2. Discovering how we view light vs how our camera (light harvester) views light.
3. Exploring how the viewers eye moves through your images from the warms and cools to the brights and darks.
4. Discover the true value of light in our images.
5. Learn how do photographers describe and talk about light.
6. Further your understanding of the ways in which light interacts with our scenes.
7. Develop the skills so you can you most effectively use light in your images.
8. Find new ways you can break out of your normal mode of working with light.

In this class we will talk about the following concepts:

1. Explore different elements of color and what they bring forth emotionally
2. Look at how our eyes see color vs how our camera sees colors.
3. Examine the psychology of color and what it means or represents in our images.
4. Review the five main color schemes in images and how they each communicate something differently.
5. Discover how you can find the color schemes that are present in your own images through free mapping tools.
6. Break down exactly what white balance is compared to color balance and why they are so vitally important.

Discover in this class the following things!

1. Deepen your knowledge with a deeper dive into some more obscure compositional elements and talk about how balance, shape, form, movement impact your composition and your images.
2. Review less frequently seen types of composition techniques use by some of the best professional photographers like The Plunge, The Echo, The Layer Cake, The Arrow, The Hub, among others.
3. Look at the 4 forces of composition.
4. Dive into the 4 pillars on infield compositions.
5. Learn to understand and overcome some of the challenges specific to trying new compositions and how to see them.  
6. Receive specific information on the special considerations for scene specific captures and how I aligned technique, vision, and processing.
7. Review the 11 universal symbols most frequently encountered in nature photography, what they mean, and how to use them in your images.
